Malang - 4 nights
After a smooth train journey to Malang, I arrived early in the morning and caught a glimpse of the Rainbow Village as we pulled in. I checked into my hostel but couldn't get into my room yet, so I joined a free walking tour. We explored the vibrant Kampung Warna Warni, with its rainbow-colored streets, murals, and narrow alleys, and visited the local Alun-Alun square with its diverse religious sites.
I wasn’t feeling well as the day went on, so after a brief exploration of the local bird and plant market, I returned to the hostel, only to discover I had a 39°C fever. Given the risks of Malaria in Mentawai, I went to the hospital for tests, which involved hours of waiting. I eventually got medication and, deciding against a long journey for a private hotel room, stayed at the hostel. Fortunately, the hospital results for Malaria came back negative, but I still felt weak. I had to cancel my plans to see Indonesia's largest waterfall Tumpak Sewa and of course Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen, a shame, because I was really looking forward to do the tour.
Though I felt a bit better the next day, my stomach issues persisted. Despite my health issues, I’ve decides t make the best of my stay in Malang and went to a local waterfall and botanical garden. Again I got disappointed when I find out the site was poorly maintained. Not really recommendable if you ask me.
My last night I’ve got invited to a traditional Arabic music and prayer recitation and I enjoyed my time surrounded by locals and kids from the neighborhood. After a good night's sleep, I prepared to head to Bali, took the time to get my backpack repaired and got ready for leaving Java behind. In the evening, I took the overnight bus to Bali where I’ll take the boat to Lombok! The last couple of days I made a lot of plans and I’m really looking forward to explore a new island.
So, maybe, Malang wasn’t the best experience, but I’m really grateful to the people I’ve met, who despite my sickness made my stay in Malang memorable.
